Parts

MG EV parts generally fall into three tiers. Genuine MG (and IM) parts are made to the original specification and matched to your VIN; quality used parts pulled from wrecked vehicles suit body panels, lights, motors and interior trim; and aftermarket parts cover common wear items such as brake pads, filters, wiper blades and suspension bushes. High-voltage components are almost always genuine or reconditioned rather than generic aftermarket.

The main groups to think about:

  • Body & exterior: bumpers, panels, mirrors, lighting and glass. These differ sharply between the MG4 hatch, ZS EV and MGS5 SUVs, the Cyberster convertible and the IM5 sedan and IM6 wagon.
  • Suspension & steering: control arms, bushes, struts, ball joints and tie rods, which wear as they would on any car of similar weight.
  • Brakes: pads, discs and calipers. Regenerative braking does much of the slowing, so friction pads and discs often last longer than on a petrol car, but that also means rust and seized calipers from under-use are worth watching.
  • 12V & high-voltage electrical: the 12V battery, DC-DC converter, on-board charger, contactors, wiring and control modules.
  • Cooling & thermal: coolant pumps, hoses, radiators and battery thermal-management parts.
  • Cabin & wear items: pollen/cabin filters, wiper blades, tyres and 12V battery.
  • Charging hardware: the CCS2 inlet, charge-port flap, latch and pilot wiring.

Fitment varies by model and year, so before buying check the VIN, the build plate/date, the battery or pack revision, and whether the part suits your exact drivetrain (RWD or AWD) and trim.

Battery & Range

MG uses different battery chemistries across its Australian range. Smaller and entry packs, such as those in the MGS5 EV and the base MG4, generally use lithium iron phosphate (LFP), which is robust and tolerant of frequent full charging. Longer-range MG4s, the Cyberster and the higher IM5/IM6 grades use nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC/NCM) cells for higher energy density. Usable capacity varies widely, roughly from the low-40s kWh in the older ZS EV up to around 100 kWh in top IM models, so confirm the figure for your exact variant and year.

All lithium packs lose some capacity over time. MG's own warranty terms set an expectation here: according to MG's Australian warranty documentation, a high-voltage battery is treated as a valid claim if usable capacity falls below 70% within the warranty period. Vehicles retailed on or after 1 August 2024 are covered by MG's 10-year/250,000km warranty, which extends to the traction battery; earlier cars typically carried a 7-year term. Always verify the terms against the specific car's paperwork.

Repairs can sometimes be done at module level rather than replacing the whole pack, depending on the fault and MG's service policy, but access is limited to authorised repairers. High-voltage work is specialist-only: the packs carry lethal voltages and must be de-energised and handled by a licensed EV technician with the correct equipment. Do not open, probe or attempt DIY repairs on any MG HV battery.

Charging

Every MG EV sold in Australia uses the local standards: a Type 2 socket for AC charging and a CCS2 (Combo 2) inlet for DC fast charging, so the same public chargers and home wallboxes work across the range.

On-board AC charging typically runs at around 6.6 kW to 11 kW depending on model and grade, meaning a home wallbox or destination charger will refill most packs overnight. A standard 10A wall socket works as a slow trickle option but is best kept for emergencies.

DC fast-charging peaks differ a lot across the range. The older ZS EV tops out at roughly 50-90 kW depending on variant; the MG4 sits around 88 kW on the LFP pack and up to about 140-144 kW on the NMC packs; the MGS5 EV reaches up to roughly 150 kW; and the Cyberster peaks near 144 kW. The IM5 and IM6, in their 800V NMC form, are among the fastest-charging cars in the country, with MG quoting peak DC rates up to around 396 kW, while the entry LFP IM grade uses a 400V system with a lower peak. Real-world speeds depend on battery temperature, state of charge and the charger itself. For daily use, most owners rely on home AC charging and use DC only on longer trips.

Specifications

MG's electric range covers very different vehicles, so identifying your exact variant matters. The current and recent line-up includes:

  • MG4 and MG4 Urban - the compact hatch, RWD, offered with LFP or NMC packs across trims.
  • ZS EV - the earlier compact SUV (wagon body), front-wheel drive single motor, sold 2020-2024.
  • MGS5 EV - the newer medium SUV, rear-wheel drive, LFP battery.
  • Cyberster - the two-seat convertible, available in RWD or dual-motor AWD.
  • IM5 (sedan) and IM6 (wagon/SUV) - the premium IM-badged cars, RWD or AWD, with 400V LFP or 800V NMC platforms.

Frequently asked questions

Does my MG EV use an LFP or NMC battery?

It depends on the model and grade. Entry and smaller packs, such as the base MG4, the MGS5 EV and the entry IM5, generally use lithium iron phosphate (LFP), while longer-range MG4s, the Cyberster and higher IM5/IM6 grades use nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC/NCM). LFP tolerates regular charging to 100%, whereas NMC owners are often advised to charge to around 80% for daily use. Why do the brake pads on my MG EV last so long?

MG EVs use regenerative braking, where the electric motor slows the car and recovers energy, so the friction brakes do far less work than on a petrol car. Pads and discs often last well beyond typical service intervals. The flip side is that lightly used brakes can corrode or seize, so occasional firm braking helps clean the discs, and inspections should still check for rust, sticking calipers and pad condition even when wear is minimal.

Can I get used or aftermarket parts for an MG EV?

Yes, for many items. Body panels, lights, mirrors, interior trim and even motors are commonly sourced used from wrecked vehicles, and wear items like brake pads, filters, wipers and suspension bushes are available aftermarket. High-voltage components, however, are almost always genuine or professionally reconditioned. Whatever the source, match parts to your VIN, build date and exact drivetrain, because fitment differs across the MG4, ZS EV, MGS5, Cyberster and IM models.

How do I tell which MG EV variant I have?

Start with the badging, then confirm with the VIN and the compliance/build plate, which record the model, build date and market. Service records and the original specification sheet will tell you the battery chemistry, pack size and whether the car is rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. This matters because a single model name, such as MG4 or IM6, can cover several very different battery and drivetrain combinations.

Is it safe to work on an MG EV high-voltage battery myself?

No. MG traction batteries operate at hundreds of volts and can be lethal. They must be de-energised, isolated and handled only by a licensed EV technician using the correct tools and protective equipment. Do not open, probe or attempt to repair the pack, the on-board charger or the DC-DC converter yourself. Routine jobs like 12V battery, tyres, wipers and cabin filters are fine for a competent home mechanic; anything orange-cabled is specialist work.
