Parts

Hyundai EV parts generally fall into three tiers. Genuine Hyundai parts are matched to the exact variant and are the safest choice for safety-critical and high-voltage components. Quality used parts, pulled from written-off cars, suit body panels, trim, lights and some mechanical items where condition can be verified. Reputable aftermarket parts cover consumables and wear items well, though fit and quality vary.

  • Body & exterior: bumpers, panels, mirrors, lighting, badges and clips; often model-year specific.
  • Suspension & steering: control arms, bushes, links, shock absorbers, wheel bearings and tie rods, subject to extra weight from the battery.
  • Brakes: pads, discs and calipers; regenerative braking means friction components typically last much longer, so surface corrosion is a bigger concern than wear.
  • 12V & high-voltage electrical: the 12V auxiliary battery, DC-DC converter, contactors, wiring and modules; HV components are specialist-only.
  • Cooling & thermal: coolant pumps, hoses, radiators and chiller parts that manage the traction battery and power electronics.
  • Cabin & wear items: pollen/cabin filters, wiper blades, 12V battery, and suspension wear parts.
  • Charging hardware: the charge-port inlet, locking actuator, pilot circuitry and portable cables.

Fitment differs across the range. The IONIQ 5, IONIQ 6 and IONIQ 9 use Hyundai's E-GMP platform, while KONA Electric, INSTER and the original IONIQ hatch share more with combustion-derived designs, so parts rarely interchange between families.

Before buying, check: the full VIN; the build plate and build date; the exact model grade and battery size; drivetrain (front-, rear- or all-wheel drive); and any battery pack or software revision. Photograph the part number on the old component and confirm it matches.

Battery & Range

Hyundai's current Australian EVs use lithium-ion nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) chemistry rather than LFP. Usable capacity varies widely by model: the INSTER offers roughly 42 kWh or 49 kWh, the KONA Electric around 48.6 kWh or 64.8 kWh, the IONIQ 6 about 53 kWh or 77 kWh, the IONIQ 5 around 84 kWh gross (about 80 kWh usable in current spec), and the large IONIQ 9 about 110 kWh. The original IONIQ hatch used a smaller pack of roughly 28 kWh early and about 38 kWh later. The NEXO is a hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle with only a small buffer battery, so it behaves differently.

All EV traction batteries degrade gradually. According to Hyundai Australia's warranty terms, the high-voltage battery is covered for 8 years or 160,000km (whichever comes first), separate from the standard vehicle warranty of 5 years, extendable to 7 with eligible Hyundai servicing. Warranty coverage generally applies if capacity falls below a defined threshold within that period; confirm the exact figure and conditions in your car's own warranty passport, as terms differ by model and build year.

Hyundai packs are built from modules within a larger case. In some cases a faulty module or component can be addressed rather than replacing the whole pack, but this depends on the platform, fault type and parts availability, and is decided by qualified technicians. E-GMP packs (IONIQ 5, 6 and 9) differ structurally from KONA and INSTER packs.

High-voltage battery work is specialist-only. These systems operate at hazardous voltages (up to around 800V on E-GMP models) and must only be diagnosed, disconnected or serviced by suitably trained technicians using correct equipment. Never open, probe or attempt DIY repairs on an EV battery, and treat any physically damaged pack as dangerous.

Charging

Hyundai EVs sold in Australia use the internationally standard connectors: a Type 2 socket for AC charging and the CCS2 (Combo 2) connector for DC rapid charging. A single charge port on the car accepts both, so home wallboxes, destination chargers and public DC stations all work with the appropriate cable.

Onboard AC charging depends on the car's internal charger. Many Hyundai EVs support up to around 10.5 kW on a three-phase supply (for example the IONIQ range and INSTER), while the KONA Electric is typically about 7.2 kW single-phase. On a standard single-phase Australian home supply, expect roughly 7 kW regardless, which suits overnight charging.

DC rapid charging varies significantly by platform. The E-GMP models, IONIQ 5, IONIQ 6 and IONIQ 9, use an 800V architecture and can peak at well over 200 kW (commonly quoted around 233 kW), enabling a 10-80% top-up in roughly 18-24 minutes under ideal conditions. The KONA Electric peaks near 100 kW, the INSTER around 120 kW, and the earlier IONIQ hatch is lower again. Real-world speeds depend on the charger, state of charge, battery temperature and preconditioning.

For everyday use, a home AC wallbox covers most owners, with public DC stations reserved for longer trips. Figures above are typical ranges and vary by model, grade and year, so check your specific variant. Note the E-GMP cars also support vehicle-to-load (V2L), letting the car power external equipment through an adapter or an interior socket.

Specifications

Hyundai's Australian EV range mixes platforms and body styles, so specifications differ markedly between models. Key variables are body style, drivetrain layout and battery/range tier.

  • Small SUVs and hatches: the INSTER and the earlier IONIQ hatch (2017-2022) sit at the compact end; the KONA Electric is a popular small SUV. These are generally front-wheel drive.
  • E-GMP core range: the IONIQ 5 (mid-size SUV), IONIQ 6 (sedan) and IONIQ 9 (large SUV) offer both rear-wheel-drive single-motor and all-wheel-drive dual-motor options, with multiple battery and range tiers.
  • Newer and specialist models: the ELEXIO is a more recent electric SUV, while the NEXO is a hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle rather than a battery EV.

To identify a specific variant, check the badging (model name and any grade or Long Range wording), the VIN, and the compliance and build plate. The VIN and build plate confirm model year and, together with the grade, help pin down battery size and drivetrain. Because a nameplate like IONIQ 5 or KONA covers several configurations, the exact grade and build date matter more than the model name alone when sourcing parts.

Why do my Hyundai EV brake pads seem to last so long?

Regenerative braking does most of the slowing on an EV by using the electric motor to recover energy, so the friction brakes are used far less than on a petrol car. That means pads and discs typically last much longer. The trade-off is that lightly used discs can develop surface rust, especially in coastal or humid areas. Occasional firmer braking helps keep them clean. When servicing, have the calipers and slide pins checked so they do not seize from underuse.

Can a single module in a Hyundai EV battery be replaced instead of the whole pack?

Sometimes. Hyundai packs are made of modules inside a larger case, and depending on the platform, the fault and parts availability, a technician may be able to address a module or component rather than replacing the entire pack. This is not guaranteed and must be assessed by qualified EV technicians with the right diagnostic tools. E-GMP packs (IONIQ 5, 6 and 9) are built differently from KONA and INSTER packs, so what is feasible varies between models.

Are parts interchangeable between different Hyundai EV models?

Often not. The IONIQ 5, IONIQ 6 and IONIQ 9 share Hyundai's dedicated E-GMP platform, while the KONA Electric, INSTER and the original IONIQ hatch use different underpinnings. Is the Hyundai NEXO an electric car for parts purposes?

The NEXO is a hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle, not a plug-in battery EV. It generates electricity onboard from hydrogen and carries only a small buffer battery, so it does not charge from Type 2 or CCS2 like the IONIQ or KONA models. Its fuel-cell stack, hydrogen tanks and related systems are highly specialised and were sold in very limited numbers in Australia.
