This independent guide helps Australian owners and workshops find spare parts, battery information, charging details and specifications for BMW's electric range, including the i3, i4, iX and iX3. BMW has sold a broad EV line-up here since the i3 arrived in 2014, spanning compact hatches through to large luxury sedans and SUVs. Parts
BMW EV parts fall into three broad tiers. Genuine BMW parts carry factory part numbers and guaranteed fitment. Quality-used parts, pulled from wrecked or written-off cars, suit body panels, trim, lights and interior items where a serviceable original makes sense. Aftermarket parts cover consumables and service items; quality varies, so match specifications carefully, particularly for anything electrical or safety-related.
The main part groups for BMW EVs are:
- Body & exterior: bumpers, panels, mirrors, glass, closed (grille-less) or part-closed front fascias specific to i models.
- Suspension & steering: control arms, bushes, ball joints, air-suspension components on iX and i7, wheel bearings.
- Brakes: pads, discs and calipers. Regenerative braking does much of the slowing, so friction components often last considerably longer, but discs can surface-rust from light use.
- 12V & high-voltage electrical: 12V battery, wiring, contactors, on-board charger, inverter and drive units (HV work is specialist-only).
- Cooling & thermal: battery coolant pumps, hoses, chillers and radiators that regulate pack temperature.
- Cabin & wear items: pollen/cabin filters, wiper blades, tyres, 12V accessories.
- Charging hardware: Type 2/CCS2 charge port, flap, and portable charging cables.
Fitment differs markedly across the range; an i3 shares almost nothing with an iX. Even within a model, facelifts and battery revisions change part numbers.
Before buying, check:
- The full 17-digit VIN and build (production) date.
- The compliance/build plate for market and specification.
- Exact model, trim and drivetrain (eDrive/xDrive).
- Battery pack revision or capacity where a part is pack-specific.
Battery & Range
BMW's electric range uses lithium-ion packs with NMC (nickel-manganese-cobalt) chemistry across its fifth-generation eDrive hardware; BMW has not used LFP in its Australian passenger EVs to date. Usable capacity varies widely by model and year: compact models such as the iX1 and iX2 sit in the mid-60s kWh, the original iX3 around the mid-70s kWh usable, the i4 and i5 in the low-80s kWh, and the flagship iX and i7 into the 100-plus kWh range. The early i3 used much smaller packs that grew across its life.
All lithium packs lose some capacity with age and use. According to CarsGuide, BMW covers its high-voltage batteries for eight years or 160,000km, whichever comes first, and treats a drop below roughly 70% of original usable capacity within that period as excessive degradation eligible for repair. Confirm the exact terms against your vehicle's warranty booklet, as coverage can differ by model year and market.
BMW packs are built from modules within a larger housing. In principle this allows module-level repair rather than full-pack replacement, but access to modules, diagnostics and authorised repair pathways is limited and generally handled by BMW or specialist EV repairers. Whether a fault is repaired at module level or the whole pack is replaced depends on the failure, parts availability and the tooling the repairer holds.
Safety: high-voltage systems can be lethal. De-energising, isolating and handling a BMW battery is specialist-only work requiring correct training, insulated tooling and PPE. Never open, probe or attempt repairs on an HV pack yourself, and treat any damaged, swollen or water-affected pack as a serious hazard.
Charging
BMW EVs sold in Australia use the Type 2 connector for AC charging and the combined CCS2 (Combined Charging System) inlet for DC fast charging, matching the national standard. A single charge port handles both: the upper Type 2 section for home and destination AC, the lower two pins for DC rapid charging.
AC charging: on-board charger ratings vary by model. Most current BMW EVs accept up to 11kW three-phase AC, letting a home three-phase wallbox or many public AC chargers deliver a useful overnight or workday top-up. The early i3 was limited to lower single-phase rates (around 7.4kW on many cars). On single-phase domestic supply, AC charging is naturally slower regardless of the car's maximum.
DC fast charging: peak DC rates also differ across the range. The original iX3 peaks around 150kW, the iX1 and iX2 around 130kW, while the i4, i5, iX and i7 reach higher peaks (roughly 195-205kW on the larger packs). Peak speed is only held briefly; the charging curve tapers as the pack fills and is affected by battery temperature and state of charge. Newer generations may differ, so check your specific model and year.
Home vs public: most owners do the bulk of charging at home on a wallbox or a standard socket for slow top-ups, using DC public chargers for longer trips. Preconditioning the battery (often triggered by navigating to a charger) helps the car reach its rated DC speed in cooler conditions. Always use the supplied or a compliant cable and have fixed wall chargers installed by a licensed electrician.
Specifications
BMW's Australian EV range covers several body styles and drivetrain layouts, so identifying the exact variant matters when ordering parts. Broadly:
- i3 (2014-2021): compact hatch, rear-wheel drive, small early battery packs.
- i4 (2021 on): Gran Coupe, rear-drive (eDrive) or all-wheel drive (xDrive/M50).
- i5 (2023 on): sedan and Touring wagon, rear- or all-wheel drive.
- i7 (2022 on): large luxury sedan, mostly all-wheel drive.
- iX (2021 on): large SUV, all-wheel drive, largest packs.

BMW covers the high-voltage battery on its electric models for eight years or 160,000km, whichever comes first. Within that period, a significant loss of usable capacity (commonly assessed against roughly a 70% threshold) may be treated as a warrantable fault. The general vehicle warranty is separate and shorter. Terms can vary by model year, so always confirm the specific coverage in your vehicle's warranty documentation and service history.
Do BMW EVs use the Type 2 and CCS2 charging standard?
Yes. BMW electric vehicles delivered in Australia use a single combined port: the Type 2 section for AC charging at home or public AC points, and the CCS2 (Combined Charging System) pins below it for DC fast charging. This matches the Australian standard, so you can use the vast majority of public AC and DC chargers here. The early i3 uses the same physical standard but charges at lower rates.
Do the brakes on a BMW EV wear out faster?
Usually the opposite. Regenerative braking recovers energy by slowing the car through the electric motor, so the friction brakes do less work and pads and discs often last much longer than on a comparable petrol BMW. The trade-off is that lightly used discs can develop surface rust or uneven deposits. Occasional firmer braking helps clean them up, and the pads, discs and calipers themselves are still conventional replaceable parts.
Can a single module in a BMW battery be replaced instead of the whole pack?
In principle yes, because BMW packs are built from modules inside a housing, so module-level repair is technically possible. In practice, access depends on the fault, parts supply, diagnostic tooling and the repairer's authorisation. Some faults are resolved at module level; others lead to a full-pack replacement. This is specialist high-voltage work and should only be assessed and carried out by BMW or a qualified EV battery repairer, never as a DIY job.
What should I check before buying used parts for a BMW EV?
Start with the full 17-digit VIN and the build date, then confirm the exact model, trim and drivetrain (eDrive versus xDrive). Many parts changed with facelifts and battery revisions, so a part that fits one build year may not fit another. For anything pack-specific or electrical, verify the battery capacity and part number. For used body and trim parts, check condition, colour code and that any electronics are matched to your car.
